The Importance of the Visionary-Integrator Relationship

Do you remember the video of Walt Disney from 1966 where he shared his plans for E.P.C.O.T. – Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow.  He called it “the heart of everything at Disney World”.

That is a vision.  He was a visionary.

Think of other successful visionary companies.

  • Apple
  • McDonald’s
  • Microsoft Corporation
  • Southwest Airlines

They were led by visionary leaders … right?   They also had the right fit integrators, or operators, bringing those visions to life.

Walt Disney had Roy Disney

Steve Jobs had Steve Wozniak

Ray Kroc had Fred Turner

Bill Gates had Paul Allen

Herb Kelleher had Rollin King

These are some examples that this combination of visionaries and integrators is Rocket Fuel.  Don’t believe me … there’s an entire book about this very topic.  While integrators are less often in the headlines, they are an equally important part of the equation that makes these companies successful.

Characteristics of a visionary

  • Love big ideas, thinking about the future, dreaming of a better outcome
  • Tend to move on quickly. Not interested in the details of getting from here to there.
  • Thrive on creating and maintaining important relationships
  • Lands the plane on big deals, closes big contracts
  • Creative, innovative, passionate, enthusiastic
  • Exude positivity
  • Speak in the present tense while illustrating how to get to the future
  • Paint a picture with their words

Characteristics of an integrator

  • See things as they are, not as they’d like them to be
  • Strong project management
  • Focused on results
  • Approach things logically
  • Look for resolution
  • Skilled at negotiating conflict
  • Keeps the oars rowing in the same direction
  • Acts as connective tissue across the organization

Are you a visionary?   Are you an integrator?  You may be neither.  I am 100% an integrator.  Well technically, based on an on-line quiz – I am 98% integrator.  While I work well with other integrators, we think similarly after all, I know that where I really add value is (1) being the integrator to a visionary and (2) helping integrators establish that Rocket Fuel relationship with their visionaries.

Pick a Lane

Someone told me “you CAN do lots of things, but what do you WANT to do, what comes naturally to you, what gives you energy”.

In a recent discussion the president of a business shared with me that she’s over 90% visionary AND over 90% integrator.   As a pretty evenly balanced visionary/ integrator – she made a decision to focus on what she was most passionate about and what came naturally to her – being a visionary.  As a result, she brought on an external integrator to act as an implementor.

Note that only 1 out of 20 Visionaries (5%) possesses both skill sets of the Visionary and the Integrator. These people are a very rare breed!   Most people are very clearly one, or the other, or neither.   My visionary score is 46%, compared to my 98% integrator score.  In small- to medium-sized businesses there is around a 4 to 1 ratio of Visionaries to Integrators, so a good Integrator is hard to find.

Can you imagine if Steve Jobs didn’t have Steve Wozniak?  Or Walt Disney didn’t have Roy Disney?   While I wouldn't bet against these visionaries - you can bet their success would have taken longer to achieve, and they may not have become the mega-brand household names they are today.
